The Yoga of Meditation

Dhyāna Yoga

Having shown that true renunciation lives inside action, Krishna now teaches how to steady the instrument through which all action flows: the mind. Chapter six is the Gītā at its most practical on meditation. Krishna describes the quiet seat and upright posture of the meditator, the balanced life of measured food, rest, work and recreation, and the patient discipline of gathering a wandering mind back, again and again, without harshness. He offers the beloved image of a lamp burning in a windless place, unflickering — the mind of one absorbed in the Self. Arjuna, honest as ever, protests that the mind is as hard to restrain as the wind, and Krishna agrees, yet assures him it yields to steady practice and dispassion. For anyone afraid of failing on the path, Krishna gives one of the most tender promises in scripture: no sincere effort toward the good is ever lost. The crown of this chapter is the seeker who sees God everywhere, and everything in God.

Key verses

Verse 6.5

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

Lift yourself by your own self; do not let yourself sink. For the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone its enemy.

The most important voice you hear today is your own. Speak to yourself as an ally would — firm when needed, but always on your side.

Verse 6.17

yuktāhāra-vihārasya yukta-ceṣṭasya karmasu yukta-svapnāvabodhasya yogo bhavati duḥkha-hā

For one who is moderate in food and recreation, measured in effort at work, and balanced in sleep and waking, yoga becomes the destroyer of sorrow.

Your spiritual life is built on ordinary rhythms — meals, sleep, work, play. Bring one of them back into balance this week and watch your inner weather clear.

Verse 6.26

Wherever the restless and unsteady mind wanders, from there one should draw it back and bring it under the guidance of the Self alone.

Meditation is not the absence of wandering — it is the gentle return. Every time you notice and come back, you have succeeded, not failed.

Verse 6.30

One who sees Me everywhere, and sees all things in Me — I am never lost to that person, and that person is never lost to Me.

You cannot fall out of a presence that is everywhere. Look for the sacred in one unexpected place today, and feel how held you already are.

Verse 6.34

cañcalaṁ hi manaḥ kṛṣṇa pramāthi balavad dṛḍham tasyāhaṁ nigrahaṁ manye vāyor iva su-duṣkaram

The mind is restless, turbulent, powerful and obstinate, O Krishna; to restrain it seems to me as hard as restraining the wind.

Even Arjuna, the greatest of warriors, found his own mind unruly. If yours feels the same, you are not broken — you are simply human, and in very good company.

Verse 6.35

asaṁśayaṁ mahā-bāho mano durnigrahaṁ calam abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa ca gṛhyate

Without doubt, O mighty-armed one, the mind is restless and hard to restrain; yet through practice and dispassion, O son of Kuntī, it is held.

Krishna does not deny the difficulty — He gives the method. Practice a little every day, hold outcomes lightly, and the restless mind slowly becomes your instrument.

Verse 6.40

O Pārtha, one who strives on this path is never destroyed, here or hereafter; no one who does good, dear friend, ever comes to grief.

Every sincere step you take toward the good is banked forever; nothing is wasted, even the attempts that felt like failures. Begin again today without fear.
